Remote Choke

Lots of options for remote chokes. Here are a couple of options.

Stage 6 Universal Remote Choke

Number 6 has been busy. He dug up this scooter remote choke that will work with our PWK 28

As much as I love my Australian version Freeride (no stutter!!!!), the position of the choke is beyond silly! So after seeing the post to install a remote choke (https://ktmfreeride250.wordpress.com/remote-choke/ ) I decided to install one. However, the post was a bit lacking in detail and the install took a bit longer than expected, as I had to get more parts The parts are cheap in the USA, cost more to post to Australia than what the parts were!

So, going by the post on ktmfreeride250, I ordered the choke cable and waited the week. But when it arrived I realised it didn’t include the choke adapter (item on LHS of pic) for the PWK28 carby. So, order the adapter (and pay twice as much for postage!) and wait another week!!!

So now I have the parts and realise my next mistake!! I bought the 50cm (~20″) cable and its a 5cm (~2″) too short. But luckily its the same cable as a bicycle and I can buy that locally Should have ordered the 150cm (60″) cable that was a no cost option when originally purchasing! Easy to cut to size, but cannot make it longer

Now the next minor thing is the shape of the cable end doesn’t match the choke adapter, but the quick use of the file soon sorted that out.

Putting in is very easy once you can get to it, only 3 bolts to remove the tank to get access. But that created my next issue. Why did KTM put such a thin wall tube on the tank to carby? I have read on other posts that it splits while riding, well at least mine did it at home – but took another trip to the shops get a replacement tube (of bigger wall size).

So now its all installed and only have to mount the lever. After much deliberation, was so easy to just cable tie to the tank breather and accelerator cable, it rises nicely in a convenient location. I may move it to the handlebars down the track, but for now it works fine.

So now for the first test, flick the choke lever, press the starter and it fires straight away from cold with no poking behind the fuel valve to try and get at the choke lever Many a time I have tried to start with no choke rather than get to that ridiculous location, but always curse my laziness as its hard to start when cold.

So, what should have been a 30 minute job turned into a 2+ week marathon, hopefully anyone else doing this gets the right parts now straight off! Now still have to wait till next weekend before I can ride it, but at least no fumbling this time.

Cheers

300 exc/xc/w Hot Start Cable

For those of you who don’t like to hunt around for the choke, thanks to Thomas J, you can have a remote choke lever on your handlebar.

Thomas took a “Hot Start Control Cable” from his 2009 300 exc (xc in the US) and was able to mount it on the FR250. It took some adjustment, but he managed to make it work. Unscrew the choke from the carb and screw in this cable.

Here is a similar cable that might work KTM p/n 59002025200 – but it has a 90 degree bend at the carb so it might not quite work as well.

Here is how the remote hot start cable fits into the carb.
